My First Sleep Out

As someone with lived experience of homelessness, I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first Sleep Out.

Sleep Out is EveryYouth’s annual event, where supporters give up their beds and sleep outside in solidarity with young people experiencing homelessness.

The evening was hugely enjoyable, with a moving spoken word performance from Surfing Sofas, a lineup of hilarious comedians and a badge-making workshop run by students at UAL. Not to mention the delicious food provided by Tideford Organics and Ludlow Cake Jar Company – especially the cookies and cream flavour.

Other supporters reflected on the night by sharing how challenging it was. People referenced how cold and uncomfortable it was – especially those who had never even camped before! But by the end of the night, it was made clear that young people who experience homelessness are very resilient.

The night was certainly cold and uncomfortable. I got little to no sleep and was exhausted for the following days.

“I didn’t feel so alone”

During my own struggle with homelessness, I often felt incredibly lonely. At times I didn’t know how I could get past it. But, as I attempted to get some sleep on November 7th, I felt safe. This sense of security didn’t come from locked gates or on-site guards; it was from those chatting and whispering around me or people snoring and sleep-talking. I didn’t feel alone. It felt like a full circle moment, knowing I have been able to make positive changes in my life with the right support. Being able to give something back is a feeling I cannot put into words.

Sleep Out is not designed to replicate the experience of homelessness but encourages participants to reflect on the issue. This year, Sleep Out reminded me how often we take our comforts for granted. It’s hard to grasp what it’s really like to have nothing. Even I felt grateful to return home, bleary-eyed but safe and comfortable. This wasn’t my reality just a year ago.

I’m encouraged by the 100+ Sleep Out participants, who gave up their beds to raise vital awareness and funds for young people facing homelessness nationwide. It is a lovely reminder that I am no longer on my own and I thank you.
