Nathan’s Story | EveryYouth

Read how Nathan overcame homelessness, mental health struggles and addiction with support from EveryYouth Homed. Now he’s working, living independently, and rebuilding his future.

Nathan, now 23, came to his local EveryYouth charity, The Amber Foundation, after becoming homeless due to struggles with his mental health and alcohol dependency. With no support network around him, he was able to move into Amber’s Supported Housing Centre, Downsview, in Kent, a turning point in his journey to rebuild his life.

Nathan was able to access counselling, work experience and a structured daily programme. These gave him routine, helped him step out of his comfort zone, and supported him to develop new skills. He said:

“I think the counselling, work experience and structured daily programme helped me the most. All these things brought me out of my comfort zone so I could develop and grow.”

During his time there, Nathan also enjoyed household outgoings such as bowling and country walks, and he rediscovered his passion for music. Socialising with others was a new experience for him, but he built friendships and found mutual support.

“Amber has really turned my life around. I was able to come off all my medication with the support of staff, and my mental health is so much better now.”

With the support from EveryYouth Homed for a deposit, Nathan is now living independently in a house share after securing full-time employment with an industrial cleaning company. The role keeps him active, motivated and focused, helping him maintain his progress.

Looking ahead, Nathan has clear goals for the future. He hopes to pass an intensive driving course and is determined to return to his trade as a mechanic. “I think my biggest achievement since beginning my Amber journey is finding who I am as a person.

“If it wasn’t for Amber, I would have dived deeper into my drug and alcohol use, and my mental health would have worsened to the point I could have been sectioned or taken my own life. I am so grateful to Amber for helping me get my life back on track.”

Today, Nathan is proud of how far he has come and is excited about building a brighter, more independent future.
