Stephanie* shares how EveryYouth’s Homed programme helped her move into her first long-term home and transition into independent living:
My name is Stephanie and I’m proud to have moved into my first home thanks to EveryYouth and my local EveryYouth charity, The Benjamin Foundation.
After leaving a challenging situation with my mum, I was ready to embrace independence and create a home of my own. But setting up my one-bedroom newbuild in West Norfolk didn’t come without challenges. With the help of a support worker at The Benjamin Foundation, I set up broadband, utilities bills, and council tax.
“After leaving a challenging situation with my mum, I was ready to embrace independence and create a home of my own.”
I was able to get household items such as a washing machine and fridge freezer through the Client Hardship Fund, as well as vouchers funded by The Benjamin Foundation to help furnish my home. This support, along with budgeting advice, helped me to manage my bills responsibly and avoid falling into debt. Thanks to EveryYouth Employed, I had financial support with my rent deposit.

One of the most significant challenges in making my house feel like a home was arranging flooring for my bedroom, landing, and stairs. Initially, the cost of the flooring was beyond my budget, but with grant funding from The Benjamin Foundation, I was able to have it fitted. This transformed my living space, making it much more comfortable, cosy, and welcoming. I’m incredibly pleased with the outcome and thankful for the support I’ve received.
I’ve also been focusing on my mental health. I’m attending counselling sessions which are helping me to set healthy boundaries and build strategies for dealing with challenging relationships.
Despite experiencing some recent setbacks caused by health issues, I’m interested in pursuing a career in hair and beauty and continue to balance my goals with the care of my dogs, who provide companionship and comfort.
