The number of young people facing homelessness across the UK has risen to 118,134 – that’s 1 in 62 young people, or one young person every four minutes.
The figure represents a significant 10 percent rise on the previous year, showing that youth homelessness is at an all time in the UK. The actual number is likely to be much higher due to hidden or unreported homelessness.
This March, we are helping young people transition out of homelessness through our Put Youth Homelessness to Bed campaign. Our support includes providing housing specialists, rent deposits, and home essentials so young people can create a safe and welcoming home.
We have partnered with some of the UK’s most-loved brands to emphasise the importance of a good night’s sleep. We’re also encouraging everyone to shop our exclusive store, with proceeds going towards young people in our Network of 16 youth homelessness charities.
One of those young people is Theo*, who received support from his local EveryYouth charity, The Benjamin Foundation. He was provided with a room in supported accommodation as part of the Future Builders programme and assisted with financial and mental health support.
He told us: “The whole team there, I cannot speak highly enough of. They really gave me confidence. They built me back up from basically nothing. They gave me the opportunity to get a coaching licence.
“They got me in touch with people to sort out my mental health which really wasn’t in the best place. They took me aside and helped me look at my finances.
“It has taken work, it has been a struggle but they have given me a chance to prove myself which I can never say thank you enough for.”
He added: “I’ve now got the confidence to know that after this, I know I am going to be alright. They gave me this place, and ever since then, it has been [smooth] sailing.”
His story is just one of many showcasing the vital support offered by our Network of Delivery Partners. Recent data indicates that 50% of young people become homeless because family or friends can no longer accommodate them [YMCA]. While various reasons contribute to this situation, we know that with the right support at the right time, young people can thrive and work towards a brighter future.
How you can support EveryYouth
You can shop our exclusive Put Youth Homelessness to Bed store. Proceeds from products like the Simba Hybrid™ Pillow, Willow’s Dream For Change Gift Set and Mark Titchner/Atelier JI’s print ‘IT’S THE HOPE THAT KEEPS US HERE’, will help young people in our Network.
It’s also not too late to donate to our fantastic participants who took part in the London Walk on March 14. Like-minded individuals and charities walked through the night to raise awareness of homelessness.
You can continue to support EveryYouth by sharing our programmes with your community or take part in a fundraising challenge of your own.
